Campaign Overview
The Campaign at a Glance
S
Situation
EO needed to promote an exclusive virtual interview with Serena Williams to 18,000+ member entrepreneurs across 60+ countries over 7 weeks.
T
Task
Drive registrations beyond passive celebrity excitement. The risk: a globally famous name that generates attention but not the specific founder relevance EO's audience requires to commit.
A
Approach
Designed the five-stage campaign funnel and wrote all copy across email, social, member hub, and forum channels. Repositioned Serena as a venture capitalist, brand builder, and founder peer rather than an athlete. Introduced scarcity deliberately in stage 3, escalated to an emotional close in stage 4, and activated peer-to-peer urgency through the Forum channel in the final 96 hours.
R
Result
+33% email open rate lift and +26% registration lift above benchmark. Event reached members across 60+ countries with simultaneous interpretation in four languages.
The Strategic Problem
Celebrity vs. Relevance
Celebrity speaker announcements generate awareness but not always commitment. Campaigns that lead with credentials ("23 Grand Slams, 4 Olympic golds") generate recognition, not conversion. The entire campaign was built around a single reframe: what does Serena's story mean to a founder competing at the highest level? That shift from "here is a famous person" to "here is someone who understands your fight" is what drove +33% email open rates above benchmark.

Stage by Stage: Messaging Strategy
Member Hub Banner
"Serena Williams is joining us on 5 November for our next Powerhouse Speakers Series"
Placed for passive visibility before active outreach. Members saw the name before they received an email, creating recognition at first contact.
Social + Email
Announcement framed around "athletes and entrepreneurs" simultaneously. No registration CTA. The job of this stage was recognition, not conversion.
First email led with Serena's entrepreneurial identity, not sports credentials. "Shaping history across multiple industries" set the frame for the full campaign narrative.
Stage intent: Build anticipation and recognition before any ask. Members who saw the hub banner and announcement were warmed before the first registration CTA appeared.
Email #1
Subject: Powerhouse Exclusive: Join Us for an Exclusive Virtual Interview with Serena Williams, A Legend On and Off the Court
First registration-focused email. Led with specifics: venture capital, brand building, fashion, children's literature. Proof of range before the ask. "On and off the court" signals entrepreneurship, not athletics.
Social Post #1
"We will dive deep into her incredible journey, career highlights, and the mindset behind her success both on and off the court."
"Mindset behind her success" speaks directly to EO founders. Positioned Serena's entrepreneurial mindset ahead of her athletic accomplishments.
Stage intent: Convert awareness into registration intent with Serena's full professional range. Longest copy in the sequence, written for members who needed more than the name to commit.
Email #2
Subject: Don't Miss the Rare Opportunity For an Exclusive Virtual Interview with Serena Williams
"Rare opportunity" introduces scarcity for the first time. Targets members who opened Email #1 but had not yet registered.
Social Post #2
"You're invited to join!" shifts from announcement to personal inclusion. Registers as individual invitation, not broadcast.
Tonal shift from awareness phase. "Rare opportunity" and "you're invited" introduce mild scarcity and personal framing for the first time.
Stage intent: Re-engage non-registrants. Scarcity language introduced here, not earlier, to preserve its impact for fence-sitters who weren't moved by stage 2.
Email #3
Subject: Prepare to be Inspired! Join Our Exclusive Virtual Interview with Serena Williams
Pivots from logistics to experience. Describes the feeling of attending, not the event itself. Designed to convert the final segment of members close to committing but not yet registered.
Stage intent: Emotional close. Subject line moved from information ("rare opportunity") to aspiration ("prepare to be inspired") to match the mental state of the last segment to convert.
Social Carousel
"Last Call! Don't miss your chance... This is your final reminder to be part of an inspiring conversation with a true icon."
Carousel format chosen for algorithmic advantage and swipeable visual urgency. Three panels: hero image, event details, language accessibility callout (Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese).
Forum Post
"Elevate your learning experience by registering with your Forum!"
Forum channel activates peer-to-peer social proof in the final 96 hours. Members register alongside their Forum group, converting an individual decision into a shared community experience.
Stage intent: Maximum urgency through the campaign's most visible channels and most personal channel (Forum peer group). The Forum play is the only channel that turns broadcast into a peer-to-peer invitation.
